As Ian points out, such situations are common. However I must say that in
practical over-the-board backgammon, it is one of the most psychological
challenging situations for X to make the correct pass. X will often feel a
bitterness in such situations and incorrectly accept the cube. The obvious
situations that is psychologically more challenging (which also occurs) is
when Player X doubles (maybe even too good), and player Y incorrectly
takes... and then after the next unlucky roll player X faces a re-cube he
should drop. A lot of players will incorrectly take that cube!
