Was OpenGL really the only issue ? It has been possible for a long time 
to do without it by configuring with the --without-board3d flags. Since 
more recently it has been possible to use GTK3 as well (--with-gtk3 
--without-board3d) although this probably hasn't been used much and may 
be a bit buggy.

The current GUI is probably inadequate for a phone or a tablet, but it 
 would be nice if gnubg would be usable this way (even with some 
 limitations) on chromebooks or on platforms where building it is 
 getting complicated (like Macs...)
