Follow-up Comment #24:
I just submitted a change based on your patch. The main differences are that I
extracted your code into a new method that gets used by all three places where
we need it and that I only allow one default application and use xdg-open as
the fallback on non-Windows systems. Ah, and it is even possible to define a
default application on Windows.
The user defaults key for this application is GSUnknownFileTool and has been
documented as well.
