Follow-up Comment #10, bug #58206 (project groff): Addressing bug #55107 will obviate the need for this particular shell pipeline at all (though tmac/pdfpic.tmac contains several other .sy calls which may still persist). But that's a more substantial change, and the patch proposed in comment #4 here is simple and low-risk, so it's something that could be done until 55107 is addressed.
The mailing list recently discussed alternative fixes to this pipeline, including replacing the problematic grep with an awk (http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/groff/2021-09/msg00061.html) or sed command (http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/groff/2021-09/msg00062.html).
