Follow-up Comment #9, bug #67630 (group groff): OP's filed it at https://bugs.gentoo.org/965092. We'll do some digging on the Gentoo side there. It's the first I've heard of it and many many people have built groff fine w/ latest make in Gentoo, so there's something more going on. Just not sure what yet..
