Follow-up Comment #16:

Discussion here also raises the question in my mind whether 'ab differs at all
from .ab (in groff, or historically).  Since groff (perhaps exclusively
amongst its peers) flushes on a break, it seems .ab ought to flush while 'ab
doesn't.
