Ok, another possibility is just that stage2 is too large for your
filesystem. Because of stage1 limitation, stage2 must be represented
as less than or equal to 8 block-lists. So if your stage2 is scattered
on your partition, then the command install fails.
There are several solutions, but I recommend that you should use
stage1.5 because stage1.5 is much smaller than stage2. However, it is
known that the stage1.5 in grub-0.5.91 does not work at all, so you
need to get the latest version from the CVS. If you don't want to use
the unreleased version, a defragmentation tool for ext2fs might help
you.
