Could you tell us specifically what mapping you are trying to use, and
what actual disks/partitions you have on your machine?

It sounds to me like you may have incorrectly specified the mapping.
In that case, GRUB would still work properly since it doesn't use the
drive mappings, but the OS it loads would be broken.
