I have searched the list but didn't find anything I could work with. This
error remains:

grub> dhcp
Probing...[3C90X] failed
Error 13: Invalid device requested
if I boot from a Grub floppy.

If I try booting of from the net:

DHCP MAC ADDR: 00 50 DA DF DE EA
CLIENT IP: 192.168.13.22 MASK: 255.255.255.0 DHCP IP: 192.168.13.15
Probing...[3C90X]BOOTP/DHCP fails.

Any ideas? With these on board EtherExpress Pro adapters booting from
floppy works:
Found Intel EtherExpressPro100 at 0xecc0, ROM address 0x0
Probing...[Intel EtherExpressPro100]Ethernetaddr: 0:b0:d0:e1:76:4f
eeprom[6] = 4701

Address: 192.168.13.23  Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Server: 192.168.13.15  Gateway: 0.0.0.0

A bit clueless...
