At the boot menu press "e".  Arrow down to the 'kernel' line and press
"e" again.  Add the word "single" to the end of the line and press
enter.  Then press "b".

What I've just instructed you to do is interactively edit the boot
sequence to include 'single' on the end of the kernel command line.
This is the same thing you do with lilo.  Grub has on-line help (ie
while you're in the menu) for navigating and the commands too.
