Title: Problems with Compaq DL380G2 running Redhat 7.2

I am encountering a problem with the bootloader.

Everything worked fine until I had to compile and install my own kernel.  (I needed to run Linux 2.4.22 kernel to access the hot-plug tape that comes with the DL380G2).

I tried configuring grub using new-kernel-pkg and grubby, but when I reboot, I got a kernel panic with a message saying the my root fs is not mounted, "cciss/c0d0p1" not valid and to set root= properly (I am writing this from memory).

Another disaster is when I tried to run grub-install, and got an error message:

# grub-install '(hd0)'
/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.

After this, I could not boot up at all, and had to boot from floppy.  Right now, the bootloader on the harddisk is messed up, and I can only boot from floppy.  I am considering one of the following:

1) re-install everything from scratch
2) switch to LILO
3) try any suggestion from this list.

Please help.
