I am getting the latter. I checked /boot/grub/device.map just now, and
it says:

(fd0) /dev/fd0

Are you currently just getting the GRUB command line when you boot or
are you just getting GRUB and then a hang? If the former, then it
should be relatively easy to figure out what's going on without having
to reinstall or anything. If the latter, then it's more curious and I
would be somewhat interested to know what the current contents of your
/boot/grub/device.map file are. You can get to it by booting into
rescue mode (see the Red Hat Linux documentation for more information on
rescue mode) from which you should be able to get to the file and see if
it looks correct.
