Follow-up Comment #2, bug #33733 (project grub):
Sorry for bothering you. It's fixed. I'm not sure what it was. Maybe it had
nothing to do with GRUB2. It might have happened at any point in the upgrade
from Lenny to Squeeze, which is probably more likely. Instead of keeping some
of my old configuration files, I accepted new ones for some packages during
the Debian upgrade, and that screwed things up alot, including deleting a lot
of packages like gnome. After reinstalling those, the GUI reappeared.
