This proposed change would mean a decrease in retrocompatibility, Thus, inherently it is a change for the worse. The reason I think we should do it is to avoid problems with non-GNU compilers that have already broken that retrocompatibility. In effect, the change would be a way of ceding to pressure for current compatibility with non-GNU programs that have broken retrocmpatibility. This change seems to be necessary, and that is the question I'm asking for advice about.
