I think you are right, ...

... thus doing this right can be a lot of work.  Yet I think it is
worth it, but since I'm not able to actually do it (or mentor it for
Google Summer of code ;-), I perhaps should shout up soon.

Seconded.  There has to be a way to define an aternative terse wording.
(Similarly to the ``short title'' for running heads in other
markup languages.)
