Grrr. I just figured this out. :-) If we have: tail: cannot open '*.xml' for reading: No such file or directory <chapter label="" id="Concept-Index"> <title>Index</title> <index role="cp"></index> ---> <para></para> </chapter> </book> It becomes valid. I use xmllint --noout --postvalid --xinclude to validate docbook. You have to look closely at what it's telling you, which I didn't before. Thanks, Arnold
