I know what went wrong, I missed the "detail" that I need to install something :-( (or, more correctly, more than "make install"). Up to now I successfully installed tens of other unix/linux packages, and all required nothing more than source packages. tex is different, it basically comes as a large collection of binary packages that need to be installed separately. I only need texlive to pass the openocd & qemu documentation builds, and I need it installed automatically (by a script) in a custom folder, so MacTex is not exactly the preferred choice. I'll reconsider the install options. Thank you, Liviu
