pdfTeX error (font expansion): auto expansion is only possible with
scalable fonts.Indeed, font expansion is only usable with scalable fonts. I don't believe it's possible to test at the TeX level whether a given font (e.g., cmr10) will ultimately be rendered as outlines or bitmaps :(. (That error message is coming from the pdftex program.) -k
