My feeling is that I am (we are?) missing something, and that it could be set in the default case in LaTeX. Actually, in the manual, it is said that the CM-Super fonts are better and needed for PDF for Texinfo TeX too. So maybe I was missing something from the beginning without the cm-super package, or TeX and LaTeX cm-super package are not the same. I do not feel cnfident on that subject, as I do not understand the subject. Something better than setting it off in the default case in LaTeX output would be to detect if the font is scalable, though I have no idea at all if it is doable. Another option would be to ask on the texlive distribution mailing list I am on. This could be on topic, as the issue may be at the intersection of LaTeX and how it is distributed. -- Pat
