Perhaps this is possible; the menu items seem to be normal push buttons, except that drawing their border is suppressed by setting the line width to 0. The only problem I can see is that you would not optimally exploit some items being short if you divide the available space in equal parts. So perhaps we should divide in proportion to constant + (raw)string-length, where it would not be very critical to have exact string length. Reacting on hover could be difficult,however.
