OK, this is feasible (and better). I pushed the patch again to
hgm.nubati.net.
Tested the new patch. It solves both of my 2 concerns about patch #1.
Just take out the if(tinyLayout) block from CreateMenuBar(), make the
corresponding change in the documentation for tinyLayout in xboard.texi
and push it, and this bug report can be closed.
