Follow-up Comment #2, bug #36202 (project xboard):
After nine years from creating the request I’m not sure I fully remember the
context.
At the time I was developing a javascript based software that could display on
a web page a chess game in progress from a PGN on the web server that updates
every time a move is made.
If xboard could automatically save a PGN of the game in progress, for example
during an engine match, my software could have shown such game in progress on
a web page.
Since then, other software developed this feature, for example cutechess-cli
is used in such context.
I’m not completely sure but the reference to proprietary formats probably
comes from my attempt to extract the information I needed from the xboard
debug file and build the PGN of the game in progress with all desired
information (clock times, eval) from there. Clearly the debug information is
in a proprietary format. However, once alternative options were found in order
to have a live PGN of an engine match in progress, at that point I abandoned
the idea of processing the xboard debug file.
