Summary: GSM Modem doesn't seem to work on some devices
Product: Neo1973 Hardware
Version: GTA01Bv3
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: GSM Modem
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I followed the HOWTO at http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Manually_using_GSM but
didn't succeed to communicate with the GSM modem:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsof | grep ttySAC0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo "1" >
/sys/bus/platform/devices/gta01-pm-gsm.0/power_on
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | tail -n 1
<6>gta01-pm-gsm gta01-pm-gsm.0: powering up GSM, thus disconnecting serial
console
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ chown uucp.uucp /dev/ttySAC0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cu -l /dev/ttySAC0
Connected.
After this there is only silence. No "AT-Command Interpreter Ready" message and
no reaction to input. The device is S/N 000182 (Date code 20070207), the
software versions are
u-boot-gta01bv3-r3_0_0_1321.bin
uImage-2.6-moko8-r1_0_1288_0-fic-gta01.bin
openmoko-devel-image-fic-gta01-20070310234745.rootfs.jffs2
from http://buildhost.openmoko.org/tmp/deploy/images.

I had the same problem with my P0 device. On two others it worked fine.
I send my phone to Harald next week for analyzing the problem.

I think (based on what I saw in my measurements) the threshold is about 2.7V.
If your battery is below that, or drops to that level under load, you're in
the loop. Also, if you have an interruptible loop and let it continue, it
will deteriorate into the non-interruptible loop.
I can offer one work-around: connect the debug board and hold the device in
reset. (E.g., by putting something non-metallic and heavy on the reset
button.) This should allow the battery to recharge peacefully.
If you don't have a debug board, you could trigger a reset also by pulling
H-TP1508 to GND. (Beware, I didn't try this.)
