The SIM used by AT&T for their GoPhones (71234 D) is incompatible too,
with CME error 13. What happened with the firmware update mentioned in
the first few comments here?

Comment(by cjb):
I picked up a "71234 G" SIM, and it also failed to work first time, but is
working right now, also suggesting that this is a placement issue. I
didn't try anything special to place it correctly, though.

Comment(by JJR):
The problem with my (3G) Blau SIM turned out to be that one of the four
contacts was faulty. A replacement FreeRunner can use the SIM OK.

(maybe it matters?)
I've got my Freerunner 2 days ago. So far I've got the same problem
(although I didn't have a chance to test with external antenna).
Tried with and without SD card, standard and Andy's kernel (patched for
GPS problems).

Comment(by andreas.bogk):
I also see the problem with my E-Plus 3G SIM card. It happens to have the
same round shape of contact area as all the other failing cards. Since
the contact shape is trademarked by the chipcard manufacturer, it seems
that all affected cards are Gemplus 3G cards.
I'm amazed that this bug has been unfixed for more than a year, and even
survived a new product generation. Maybe a reason is that the description
is misleading: it's not that I want to make use of any fancy 3G features,
I just want to make regular GSM phone calls, and I can't.
