There are two options to partition: 1. Wipe the partition table [not on my schedule] or 2. Manually edit the partition table.
I chose option 2. Another window opened with a progress bar which stayed at 0% for a good ten minutes. When I then activated the installer window, an error message appeared "critical error during ped_disk_new". When I clicked "ok", the window with the progress bar disappeared and I was left with the installer window supposedly displaying partition information. The only partition listed was /dev/sda. No mention of sda1 - sda8. Oddly, I had a similar problem with the Xubuntu "installer" which, I believe, also uses qtparted. I repeated the exercise with the same result.
