I just checked on my WSL install and not only is `CC` not in the path, it doesn't seem like `CC` is anywhere to be found in the first place. When configure asks for something named `CC`, it's likely the shell itself used in the build finding the lowercase `cc` in the path instead after not being able to find the uppercase version and calling it a day, to answer the question of what is returning the build compiler to be used. You're probably right that it should have a lower priority than fully removed, but I'm not so sure about the priorities `c++` and `g++` should take, as proposed (`g++ c++ CC` as opposed to `c++ g++ CC`) ------------- PR: https://git.openjdk.org/jdk/pull/12558
