The codes are exactly the same. The ICD9 is the HIPAA standard, DSM-IV is not the HIPAA standard. The terminology used by ICD9 in association with these psychiatric codes is not nearly as current, correct, complete, etc. as the terminology used by the DSM-IV. In addition, the DSM-IV includes diagnostic guidelines along with each code, and the ICD9 does not include diagnostic guidelines.
But the codes are the same. Supposedly you could use the diagnostic guidelines of DSM-IV to arrive at a code. The code would be the same under DSM-IV or ICD9. In the HIPAA transactions all you send is the code itself, so it is impossible to tell whether you arrived at the code from the DSM-IV or from the scant and obsolete ICD9 description. This should all be corrected with the ICD10, as the descriptions in the ICD10 are supposed to be the same as the DSM descriptions. However, even in that case, I would expect the DSM to still contain diagnostic guidelines above and beyond what the ICD10 will have. I hope this helps.
