Although I didn't get to attend BVARC’s Field Day activities, I do appreciate
and share the apparent core of Scott’s sentiments: FD is a communications event
in general, and a club FD should be as inclusive as possible. I think that
should go without having to be said. I saw less preparatory communications this
year than the last two, and what communication I did have with the organizers
didn't seem very welcoming. I do understand that this year’s chairman was
essentially a draftee, but he could’ve declined if the position demanded more
than he could give.

I will state right here in front of the members that Field Day is why I’m a
BVARC member. What I mean is that FD is the one club event important enough to
me to justify the marshalling of resources necessary for me to attend. That may
be sad, but it’s also simple practicality. Therefore, not much imagination is
needed to comprehend how I felt about being told it would be “prudent” to stay
home. Being prudent is really not how I’ve gotten as far as I have in anything.

Contrary to what I said last week, I did decide last Thursday to try working FD
as 1E. A part of me even hoped to rack up sufficient points to gain some
respect from the rabid contesters. Heh. Yeah right. Between interruptions and a
recalcitrant generator, I struggled to reach 50 QSOs. That’s what I’d call
embarrassing since I managed 64 last year with less operating time. Ok, you
have my permission to smirk.

Still, it upsets me to see that the club was short of HF antennas. Good grief!
I have two wire antennas up in a tiny yard, and Michael can attest that I have
at least enough spare fixings for another 75m dipole. It might not a
high-faluting antenna, but it would work all of the HF FD bands except 160m
with a tuner. BVARC merely needed to communicate the need.

Sheesh guys.

Add to the list I am starting. Add to the list.

1. Most members will not be posting to the list server because why send a
message when you are looking at the people for whom the message would otherwise
be intended.

2. As W5RH would say... Ham radio is a journey not a destination.

3. Be as inclusive as possible. When planning. Often the new ham or members are
often eager and more than willing to participate and given the help of an Elmer
like Mike, we are ALL better off for it. Those who were there will know of what
I speak.

4. We are here for each other.
