Looks like pre-linking might be worth it, then.  Do we have any
benchmarks between KDE and Gnome in general, on the standard graduate
machine?  If not, are you willing to take the time (and do you have the
time), using that same test machine?

Most likely, advanced power management setting, either not set in BIOS
(or the mainboard doesn't support APM) or Debian isn't running with it
enabled.  Either way shouldn't be hard to fix.
