I should point out that it heavily depends on the type of software you are distributing too. Just because one sales model works for one software package will mean that the same sales model will be just as successful for another software product - even by the same company. You may have to try several different approaches before you find something that works well for you, then it will be a matter of refinement. Don't expect overnight success.
