I've set up my router so that it allows the particular port number through.
When I was looking into the 'Allow Exceptions' properties of the Firewall, I
tried adding the Client-side application of the program as part of what to let
through. But it wouldn't let the packets from the program through? What am I
missing?

Firewalls generally recognise packets based on things like ip
addresses, port numbers, protocol (TCP/UDP), and whether the packet is
part of a stream it's already allowed through.

DPI is not usually a solution implemented by firewalls - the firewall
itself is usually too low in the OSI model.
