I's assuming that the contents file is empty (you're building from IPS 
packages?).  In order to be able to add SVr4 packages, you will need
a *writable* /var/sadm/install directory.  The lockfiles and the door
do not need to exist, not does the contents file.  But the logfile is
created in /var/sadm/install and the contents file is first written to
a temporary file (t.contents) and then renamed into contents.  Symlinks to 
writable files will not work.
