My experiences have been that Gparted is good for systems running
Windows XP, but it basically destroys Vista. I don't know if the
version of Gparted I had was old and out of date, but on the two
laptops I tried it on Vista became unusable and had to be restored.
Vista has a built-in tool for shrinking it that proved to work
successfully.

Just make sure the version of Gparted you're considering plays
well with Vista before you put any serious work into porting it!
