There is a way to get the same effect without using the hiddenmenu
option and so without losing the splash screen. Essentially one has
to provide an alternate menu.lst that has more options while the
default one has just one default boot entry and another advanced
options entry. Selecting the advanced options entry brings up the
alternate menu.lst via the configfile GRUB command. For eg.:

   /boot/grub/menu.lst

   title OpenSolaris (Indiana) ...
   kernel ...
   module ...

   title Advanced Boot Options
   configfile /boot/grub/menu1.lst

   /boot/grub/menu1.lst

   ... more boot entries ...

Moinak.
