Java wasn't the right choice for the current installer. There are a lot
of issues due to choosing Java for the current installer, and we are
trying to get past those. That said, I can't blame Java for all the
issues we currently have with the existing GUI.

Another point, we are planning no reuse of the old GUI. None, we have to
do it better, update the look and feel to the current Gnome desktop.
Choosing C or Java would not have made this decision different.

Well.. no, I have to admit we hadn't thought of the college students.
But, even if we had, that reason would have been at the bottom of our
list of reasons to choose Java. We want people to participate in this
project, but most of the installer is written in C and will continue to
be written in C. It has to be at some level to get down to library calls
we need to get Solaris installed.

I think it is a shame that most colleges are not teaching C. However,
we are looking for people who know C for core Solaris work. To do system
code, kernel work, even user land commands, C is a requirement in the
core Solaris. Other parts of Sun are Java oriented so their skills
would be a fit for those groups.

If we were using Java, Netbeans would be the choice I imagine.

Thanks for your input.
