In the Desktop team we have been using package categories since GNOME 1.4. I don't think any other team uses them, though. > Does GNOME2 mean that it is officially part of GNOME 2.x or that it > simply depends on the GNOME2 libraries and largely conforms to the UI > guidelines? Not even that. It means that it's delivered by the JDS consolidation as part of the GNOME 2.x stack. We started using GNOME2 to differentiate the new packages from the GNOME 1.4 packages that used the GNOME category. We also use the FIREFOX and EVOxx, THUNDERBIRD, TX, FLASH, MOZ17 categories, maybe even more. All JDS packages are also in the JDSn category. The original purpose was making it easier to uninstall one version and replace it with another. There is no pkg category name registry that I know of. Laca
