but you never know..  Is this disk that you created the zpool on
a regular disk?

One way to check whether it is a problem or not is to use the
original manifest, and change nothing but use this zpool as the build area
instead of "rpool".
If you experience the problem, then, at least, we narrow it down to
where it is, and we can take a look at why using that zpool doesn't work.

Using distro_const with "rpool" shouldn't cause any problem.  From what 
I know,
all of us in the DC team built using rpool/xxxx.  For me, I never use the
package manager, so, I can't comment on the package manager part.
If you found that using the zpool above caused problem for you,
can you try to use rpool with your additional packages and see whether it
makes a difference?

I am not sure whether your ISO will finish uploading before I leave today.
I am taking tomorrow off.  If we still couldn't figure out what's wrong by
