I would have expected to use facets on IPS packages to prevent this 
problem.  That doesn't solve the other cases, obviously, but reduces the 
problem space.  SVR4 packages that followed the Solaris guidelines for 
split / and /usr (which is not necessarily the case with third parties) 
wouldn't have this particular issue.

Moinak's cramdisk assumes a writable file system such as UFS on top; 
/usr is an hsfs.  Tim says he's got some sort of interposition/remapping 
thing, but it was far from finished when last we spoke of it and I've 
never seen it.

There are a variety of solutions possible beyond the above, but I'm 
wondering to what extent this problem actually exists in the wild.  Data 
would be advisable before proceeding in any direction.
