Sherman, Something similar just happened to me, manifesting in exactly the same symptom.
The problem is that the version of ZFS has changed between 2008.11 and the build you're using. The installer bits will build ZFS filesytems with version 14, however the ZFS code in 2008.11 only supports ZFS version 13.
