PhpNut just kindly helped me out on IRC:
at least my issue can be blamed to the Zend Optimizer version that´s
installed at my hosting provider ( Zend Optimizer v3.2.2 ).

Further info can be found here: https://trac.cakephp.org/ticket/1956
and http://www.zend.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&th=2898.

To workaround my probs I just changed some lines in /cake/libs/view/
templates/scaffolds/index.thtml( around l.84 ) and
in /cake/libs/view/templates/scaffolds/view.thtml( around l.66 & l.
159 ).
Search for the delete buttons there and modify the sprintf() function
calls that carry __(...) as param.

Example index.html l.84:
..., sprintf(__("Are you sure you want to delete id %s?", true),
$id) ...
gives me just a blank screen, while getting rid of __() like:
..., sprintf("Are you sure you want to delete id %s?", $id) ...
does fine, then.

Fyi. PhpNut told me that this Optimizer version will not allow me to
use i18n and l10n features in Cake.

Hth someone
carsten
