1. I have spent a lot of time messing around with SIP modem (as documented on 
Voip Info) and I could never get it to work.

2. AFAIK IAX modem is unsuitable as my uplink to the PSTN is T38 over SIP.

Hylafax is a good example of a piece of FOSS that actually does work in a real
