White House fires back at Rush Limbaugh

The Speaker of the House won't mention his name, but the White House has shown
a willingness to invoke the name of radio host Rush Limbaugh whenever
challenged.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) won't comment on anything the hero of
conservatives has to say — and he has a lot to say — but the White House on
Monday was only too happy to respond to Limbaugh's repeated assertion over the
weekend that he hopes President Obama's presidency fails.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, who last month blasted CNBC host Rick
Santelli from the podium in the briefing room, challenged reporters on Monday
to ask Republicans if they agree with Limbaugh's desire.
"Do they want to see the president's economic agenda fail? You know, I bet
there are a number of guests on television throughout the day and maybe into
tomorrow who could let America know whether they agree with what Rush Limbaugh
said this weekend."
Gibbs said he thought "it would be charitable to say he doubled down on what he
said in January in wishing and hoping for economic failure in this country."
"I can only imagine what might have been said a few years ago if somebody might
have said that on the other side relating to what was going on in this country
or our
endeavors overseas," Gibbs said.
He added that the audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference in
Washington, at which Limbaugh spoke over the weekend, seemed to embrace
Limbaugh's wish for Obama's failure, saying that Limbaugh's "notion of
presidential failures seemed to be quite popular in the room in which he spoke."
After Gibbs launched into Santelli in late February, challenging that the CNBC
host had not actually read the stimulus bill he was criticizing, a number of
Democrats and Republicans expressed surprise in e-mails to The Hill that Gibbs
would elevate such a critic by battling with him from the White House podium.
When asked Monday why he would "elevate" Limbaugh by addressing his criticisms
from the podium, Gibbs said Limbaugh "elevated himself."
"He's got, I understand, a fairly popular radio show," Gibbs said.
He added: "I don't think it's a crazy question to ask about the commenting on
whether or not somebody that seems to be maybe, for lack of a better word, a
national spokesperson for conservative views and many in the Republican Party,
what do I think about or what does this White House think about him on at least
two separate occasions in front of large and applauding audiences seeking the
failure of the president's economic agenda?"
Antonia Ferrier, a spokeswoman for House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio),
said Gibbs was trying to create a distraction by responding to Limbaugh.
"What we are seeing is a desperate attempt by Democrats to distract attention
away from a multi-trillion dollar spending spree taking place in Washington,"
Ferrier said. "Creating a boogeyman to change the subject does nothing to alter
the fact that there are 9,000 earmarks in the omnibus spending bill, that the
economic stimulus bill contained no Republican input or that their budget would
increase taxes on all Americans."

UPDATE 1:50pm: SIX dolphins stranded among almost 200 whales on King Island
have been returned to the water.
The people at Naracoopa beach worked from first light to save the 54 whales and
six dolphins which were alive this morning.
Outraged citizens are organizing nearly 40 other tea party events across the
nation. Official sponsors of the events include Top Conservatives on Twitter,
Smart Girl Politics, Don'tGo Movement, FreedomWorks and Americans for
Prosperity. Most of the tea parties will take place Feb. 27.2009

As of today,Cambodia is still occupied by the Vietnamese troops despite the
call from the US president to Vietnam to cease her occupation of Cambodia since
1988.
Cambodia needs Independence from Vietnam and the Vietnamese invaders.
Vietnam must cease her occupation of Cambodia at once.

Foreign workers — most of them white-collar professionals — are fleeing the
one-time economic mecca of Dubai as the economy goes into free-fall and
laid-off personnel fear being thrown into debtors' prison if they can't meet
their mortgage payments.
Local and international news reports indicate that more than 3,000 cars sit
abandoned in the parking lot at the Dubai Airport, left by debt-ridden
foreigners who would in fact be arrested and jailed if they failed to pay their
bills.
Some foreigners are said to have maxed-out credit cards, and taped desperate
notes of apology inside the windshield of their cast-off cars.
Real estate prices rose precipitously during Dubai’s six-year boom but have
dropped 30 percent during the past three months in some parts of the city. Last
week, Moody’s Investor’s Service announced that it might downgrade its ratings
on six of Dubai’s most prominent state-owned companies, citing deterioration in
the economic outlook.
So many used luxury cars are for sale they are sometimes sold for 40 percent
less than the asking price two months ago, car dealers tell reporters.
Unlike Abu Dhabi or Qatar or Saudi Arabia, Dubai does not have its own oil and
has built its reputation on real estate, finance and tourism. Many expats there
talk about Dubai as though it were a con job.
Wild rumors spread as fast as the desert wind: The Palm Jumeira, an artificial
island that is one of this city’s landmark developments, is said to be sinking,
and when you turn the faucets in the hotels built atop it, only cockroaches
pour out.
Overseas markets are being dragged down, experts note, because of the toxic
assets forced on the banks by Washington’s real estate boosters and then
resold, without conscience, by some on Wall Street.
"The result of such speculation by thousands of Wall Street gamblers was that
millions of Americans who played by the rules, and put money each month in
their 401(k) plans and elsewhere, lost much of their retirement savings. Many
likely will have to keep working well into their 60s or 70s, and delay passing
on their jobs to a new generation awaiting employment," writes Victor Davis
Hanson in the National Review online.
"Financial wizards like Robert Rubin at Citicorp, and Franklin Raines at Fannie
Mae — whom made millions as they left behind imploding corporations — had
degrees from America’s top universities.”
“They had sophisticated understanding of hedge funds, derivatives, and
sub-prime mortgages — everything, it seems, but moral responsibility for the
investments of millions of their ordinary clients."
