Violence erupts as Thai security forces crack down on protesters

Thai security forces began to crack down on antigovernment protesters in
some areas of Bangkok on Monday, a day after Thai Prime Minister Abhisit
Vejjajiva declared a state of emergency in the capital.
At least 74 people, including soldiers, were injured in the clashes, but
only one was in serious condition, a Bangkok medical center said.
Local television stations broadcast footage showing security forces
dispersing hundreds of red-shirted protesters who had been blocking the road
near Victory Monument, one of the busiest traffic centers in the capital, since
Sunday night.
The report showed many protesters injured and arrests being made by
security forces.
Meanwhile, the protesters blocked at least 15 areas in Bangkok using
public buses and cooking gas cylinders.
Security forces launched heavier operations in the afternoon to unblock
roads occupied by the protesters who set fire to some buses they seized Sunday
to keep the security personnel from approaching.
Abhisit issued an order prohibiting demonstrators from blocking roads,
adding, ''The operation of unblocking roads will continue, in order to improve
the situation.''
Sansern Kaewkamnerd, a military spokesman, said the security forces fired
into the air early Monday as protesters tried to attack them, but the
protesters refused to disperse and fired bullets and tear gas canisters and
threw firebombs at the security forces.
He said the security forces had used tear gas and other equipment to
disperse the protesters, but he denied they opened fire on them.
''Our security forces fired into the air to warn them. The equipment we
used was tear gas, shields and sticks...we did not fire at them, we just fired
into the sky as a warning,'' he said.
After the predawn dispersion and following clashes, protest leaders at
Government House are still mobilizing more people, claiming that the government
attacked the protesters and killed some of them.
One of the protest leaders, Nattawut Saikua, told local television that
several protesters were shot by security forces Monday.
Abhisit said on national television later that four soldiers had been shot
in the clash but no one had died.
The Thai premier earlier issued an order setting up a special
administration led by Supreme Commander Songkitti Jaggabatara to handle the
situation and he reiterated he would bring the country ''back to order'' as
soon as possible.
Songkitti said on national television that the security forces would use
weapons for ''self protection'' and said the authorities are determined to
clear Bangkok's traffic before the end of annual holidays this week so people
could ''live their lives as normal.''
He also urged the protesters to ''respect other people's basic rights.
National Police Chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan said the police will pursue
legal cases against the protesters, ''based on fairness and transparency.''
Antigovernment protests were also staged in other provinces, including
Chiang Mai, hometown of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
And the pro-Thaksin protesters are threatening to block city halls and
government buildings throughout the country if the government uses force to
disperse those demonstrating in Bangkok.
Thaksin, now a fugitive overseas, was ousted by a military coup in 2006
and his party was dissolved by a court order in 2007 after he was convicted of
electoral fraud.
The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority canceled nearly all public bus services
in Bangkok after more than 20 buses were seized by the protesters Sunday and
some gas stations were also closed to prevent the protesters from using
gasoline against the security forces.
Abhisit imposed a state of emergency in Bangkok and some areas in five
surrounding provinces Sunday to try to cope with the protesters.
The imposition of emergency came a day after antigovernment protesters
embarrassed the prime minister by forcing the cancellation of Asian regional
summits that were to be held in the Thai resort town Pattaya over the weekend.
