Lok Camdisc : Independence means self-rule, self-govrnment, sovereignity, autonomy, self-determination, freedom, liberty etc...French ruled Cambodia from 1800's to 1953. During colonialsim of French, the entire kingdom national infrastructure was ruled and controlled by French from domestic to foreign policy, that why we had so many French treaties between Siam. French wanted to cede some portion of Cambodian land to anybody at their own discretion, we Cambodian had no power to stop it. We were lucky that our Khmer writing did latinize like Viet, because of stiff oppositions from their own French citizen and some khmers. Most French officials residing in the kingdom of that time were scholars like Moura, Aymonier they loved to do research and write, Cambodia was a new discovery for their scholarly works.Then French transfered full authority to Cambodian under leadership of former king Sihanouk after independence granted.Of course French still have major influence to Cambodian societies also since the whole infrastructure of the country were created and established by French, especially in educational system,French language started since grammar school. Do not misconstrue assistance and dependency, since the country was poor and destitute, assistance and aides from foreign countries are needed, but domestically the era of former king Sihanouk was independent, internationally was neutral . Vietnam war, home grown insurgencies of leftists and rightists were the main factors of destabalized kingdom. Since the kingdom had no experience of foreign policy of that time, the former monarch had chosen a deadly friends from Communist blocs. Did he want his kingdom to be that way ? the answer is absolutely no. Khmer Republic regime under former Marshall Lon Nol was independent too. We received assistance from USA whom the khmer leaders of that time had no knowledge about their policy, we just received American support to fight against Communist, we did not even know what was going on in Washington, the end we were dead. The regime of Democratic Kampuchea under Pol Pot was more independent and self reliance than the other two predecessors. China was the only country supported and financed to that regime. The regime took no style with other, they run the country on their own way adopting the policies of smashing destroying and killing, the entire khmer social fabric was completely destroyed, everybody is the enemy.The motive of such atrocities is still mysterious as today. CPP regime fisrt was installed by Vietnam. That is not independent, because everything was ruled and run by Vietnam.Up to this day the regime is still influenced by Vietnam.
