The Khmer peasants who, during the Khmer Rouge regime, murdered the Cambodian people, weren't Buddhists. It's not that they liked Buddhism when it worked for them and then dramatically changed to hating it when it didn't work for them. It's that they never were Buddhists. So of course they hated it and tried to destroy it, simply because they just wanted to destroy everything,
