FYI- Dear Gentle men
I feel very unease going through your debate about children of immigrants. I just wonder about the intention of this debate. Is it what someone called the policy to give the voice and rights to the overseas migrants or the push for the ethnic-cleansing policy? Whatever, I suggest to deal this problem in the careful manner; if I am not wrong, even we do have different ethnic backgrounds, we are still the product of the modern state that has to be taken into account or integrated to build this nation. Do not go to be offensive and drive the split among what we call Cambodian (not only Khmer), otherwise, our society is going to follow the Thai ultra-nationalism or the Cambodian past history (Pol Pot regime in particular). The problem of Thailand and its non-state tribes is the result of the influence of nationalism into its internal security and the wrong belief of development approach. Firstly, Thai still believe that some tribes are not purely indigenous to region in its sovereignty; it still believed that some of them migrating from Laos and Myanmar. If i am not wrong this has been clearly reflected via the hidden agenda of its migration policy requiring the female migrants not to deliver their babies during their contract work. Moreover, very often you could see the debate in the media or the acadmics, Thai people are very sensitive with the increasing number of the migrant workers (both the undocumented and documented ). the question they always raised is if the Myamar migrants (around 2 millions) are on riot again Thailand, what can they do? Such ultra-nationalist sentiment is so weird and discriminative. They just see the negative side of the migrants but they never realise that the migrants help boost their economic growth. Regarding its development appraoch, it is not the rights base approach but benefit. Thailand faces the shortage of the labor force for its export industry since its people do not want to work hard with the small salary, The Thai usually want to have higher salaries or sell their labor in other countries that provide higher salaries. So, by learning that the investors do have the tendency to change to other countries with the cheaper labors Thailand tries to import the foreign workers in their country. However, they believe that doing so it is just the temporary, sooner or later those migrants would suggest for the salary increasing. Therefore, they have to create some policy to curb those migrants. what I previosly leant, the migrants even could not join the union, what seen as the political movement by the Thai government; let some brokers to bring the illegal migrants where they could use them for cheaper price and compete with the legal migrants. All these things sound very sad and like the conspiracy policy, but later or sooner Thai might need to rethink of its migrant policy again due to the increasing of ecomonic development in the former indochina and the natural resouce-rich Myanmar, where becoming the potential markets and resources for the investors. just an example, the rice market of Thailand (number 1 world exporter) is shaking. If Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar are more stable, then the Asian rice bowl is ...
