Best Buy Taking Baby Steps to Full RFID

For the most part, retailers agree which technologies are
going to be around for the long term. But the exact path
those technologies will--and should--take is quite another
matter.

Take Bob Willett, executive vice president of operations for
Best Buy. In an eWEEK.com interview, he justified his plans
to take very slow steps toward RFID implementation. Is he
afraid of Wal-Mart or some other RFID-cheerleading retailer
overtaking him? No. He's more afraid of opting for the right
technology for the wrong reason or executing the right
technology in the wrong way.

1. News: Survey: Linux Has Long Way to Go in Retail

Industry analyst firm Venture Development (VDC) isn't doing
its job if it isn't actively analyzing what retailers are
doing today and projecting it out to the future. VDC's
latest report delved into Point of Sale activity, its own
look at RFID efforts and a disappointing turnout for Linux
within retail.

2. Opinion: Curbing Retail Shrinkage with the Help of a Shrink

A retail HR company called Unicru is trying to identify
potential thieves before they join the payroll. Is that
something that can work? eWEEK.com talks with the company's
chief psychologist--and test author--as he gives us a
behind-the-scenes look at the tricks behind some of those
trick questions.

3. News: IBM, Microsoft and Oracle Tailor Middleware to RFID

IBM, its partners and some big name users are piloting
unannounced additions to the WebSphere product lineup. One
set of future components will be tailored to RFID across
government, industrial and retail applications. Another will
be fine-tuned for use in the retail supply chain, either
with or without RFID. Meanwhile, middleware competitors
Microsoft and Oracle are piloting RFID-adapted middleware
of their own.

4. News: Oracle Patch Set Plugs Widespread Server Holes

Oracle issued a security alert and downloadable patch
release Tuesday to plug multiple vulnerabilities scattered
across its database server products. The patches are
designed to lock down exploits affecting a variety of
Oracle's Database, Application Server, Collaboration Suite
and Enterprise Manager products.
