KO for HBO
'Sopranos,' 'Angels' lead record-breaking finish

It was the night the major TV networks would like to forget as cable network HBO dominated the Emmy Awards given out Sunday night.

HBO took 16 Emmys Sunday night (and 32 overall), leaving its nearest competition in the dust: Fox won three Sunday and 10 overall, while NBC won three Sunday and eight overall. ...[MORE]

Leaving no room for crime
Motel Six, LAPD-style, has made a name for itself by checking out who's checking in.

A half-dozen officers assigned to a squad nicknamed Motel Six are credited with the arrests of more than 100 felony and misdemeanor offenders by raiding motels across the San Fernando Valley for the past seven weeks....[MORE]

Iraq poll plan unchanged amid attacks
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The Iraqi prime minister insisted Sunday that the raging insurgency -- which has claimed 300 lives in the last week alone and resulted in a wave of kidnappings -- will not delay January elections, promising the vote will strike a "major blow" against the violent opposition. ...[MORE]

Green redeems to save the day
Dodgers: DENVER -- No one in the Dodgers' clubhouse would admit to having had a sense of urgency. No one would acknowledge having felt like their entire, magical season was being sucked into a black hole of offensive ineptitude and wasted scoring chances.

Angels bats come up missing again
Angels: ANAHEIM -- Angels shortstop David Eckstein stood on second base after leading off the bottom of the first inning with a single and advancing on an error. Considering the Angels' recent offensive struggles, it was no surprise when Eckstein was left stranded at second.

Europeans finish Ryder Cup rout
Ryder Cup: BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Over here, over there, it no longer matters. Europe again proved to be the best in the Ryder Cup with its biggest romp over the Americans.

The final blow Sunday was a scene all too familiar at Oakland Hills: With the cup already won, Padraig Harrington made a 25-foot par putt on the 18th hole of the last match that only counted in the record books.

50-plus can be good age to start small business
NEW YORK -- Stressed out and unhappy in her job with a hospital's finance department, Marianne D'Eugenio wanted to do something else. But what?

Major pains
NEW YORK -- It's a well-worn pickup line at college keg parties: What's your major?

And in today's uncertain job market, it's a lot more. Positions once filled by graduates with yesterday's hot majors are disappearing or being shipped overseas, so a student's answer to the question is one of the most important financial decisions they will ever make. ...[MORE]

FILM
Gorgeous 'Sky' has limits
Dazzling to watch, difficult to give in to, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" uses newfangled technology in the service of old-fashioned Saturday-morning serials with decidedly mixed results. The movie has no sets, no locations, just actors against blue screen, with more than 2,000 effects shots simulating the fantastic worlds around them. The sepia-toned fruits of this ambitious labor sometimes feel like "Flash Gordon" by way of Guy Maddin - visually arresting, but also chilly and off-putting....[MORE]
