Direct and Related Links for 'LCD Projector in the Living Room?'

I’ve had a hankering for a big screen in the living room for the longest time. A nice little LCD projector would be oh-so-sweet. With an LCD projector, I could fill the wall next to the tiki bar without sacrificing the floorspace of a tube-based big screen. But aside from the monetary considerations, I’m concerned as to whether the room is too bright for an LCD projector….

Growing up with Star Wars (Report)

Like many geeks, I'll be hitting a neighborhood store today to get my copy of the Star Wars trilogy on DVD (provided I can't find better prices for it online). My memory of seeing a galaxy far, far away for the first time in a movie theater is very faint. I can remember going with my dad, but that's about it. Star Wars was definitely a big part of my childhood, but I didn't get... [Continued]

The New Microsoft Windows Trial Software Download Center I'm sure you've all seen them - the mention in such and such a TV program or newsletter - about Microsoft trial software available. Speaking personally, I always see these goodies at a time or place where there's no way to take advantage of them. It never fails. I can be traveling down the local segment of the Interstate and hear that they're giving away free copies... [Continued]

Weather Watcher (Download)

Waking up in the morning, one of the first thoughts going through my mind is 'what's the weather like today?' Weather dictates what we wear, if an umbrella would be a handy thing to bring along, or if it's necessary to drive to Home Depot to buy a snow blower! Instead of having to go to weather.com to check the latest forecast, why not use Weather Watcher?... [Continued]

A Tale of Two Regeds (Tips)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Meryl Evans

Tech support tells me to type 'regedt32' as opposed to 'regedit' to access the registry from the command line (Start / Run). I question the use of 'regedt32,' but he says to do it anyway. Whenever I use the registry editor, I recall this incident and never looked up the tale of the two regs... until now. Regedt32.exe is an alternative registry editor available with Windows NT/2000 with features of its own. Regedt32.exe does not... [Continued]

If you have ever taken a look at the security options available under Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003, you will have seen the numerous options there are for securing your computer. One of the security options included allows you to create a message text that will appear when users attempt to log on. Your message text may say something such as "The local policy of this computer logs all unsuccessful logon attempts."... [Continued]

Tracking Use of User Rights (Tips)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Diana Huggins

Security reports show that many of the attacks that occur against networks are performed by trusted users, meaning users on the inside, not the outside. There are many things you can to do protect your network and monitoring use of user rights is just one of those things. Once you have assigned a user or group account additional user rights, you will probably want to track how they are using them. You can do this... [Continued]

California Has A New Anti-Spam Law (Aunty Spam)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Anne P. Mitchell

On Friday, with little fanfare and even less press coverage, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Senator Kevin Murray's SB 1457 into law. A shadow of its former self, SB 1457 still provides spam recipients with something which they haven't had for some time: a private right of action. SB 1457 provides that an ISP, the Attorney General, or an individual recipient may sue a sender for sending e-mail either from California or to a California... [Continued]

The Roughest, Toughest PC on the Block (TCB)

Industrial PCs handle the abuse that would rattle an off-the-shelf computer into a bucket of bolts. When you're operating in a harsh environment, you're either working with an industrial PC or you're working not at all. If it's mission critical, you need a PC that's up to the task. While Industrial PCs aren't the prettiest (or fastest) boxes on the block, if you need a PC that can take a licking and keep on ticking,... [Continued]
