The device enables Verizon Wireless customers to use the same wireless phone and phone number in the U.S., and overseas on the Vodafone network, the company said. The Vodafone network includes coverage throughout Europe, the Asia Pacific region, Africa and the Middle East. The phone costs $349.99 with a two-year agreement, and is available now. The a790 also features an integrated digital camera, a 260,000-color internal screen, 65,000-color external screen (including picture ID capabilities). The phone includes voice recognition technology, which enables someone use their voice to dial phone numbers and launch phone applications "with no prior training," the company added. The phone uses Qualcomm's MSM6300 chipset for global roaming between GSM and CDMA2000 1x networks, Verizon Wireless said. While the phone allows for coverage, customers will still have to pay extra for calls placed outside the U.S. For example, users will have to pay $1.29 per minute for most calls outside the U.S., except in Maldives, Indonesia, Sri-Lanka or Latvia, where the calls cost $2.49 per minute. International text messaging will cost 50 cents to send, and 5 cents to receive messages. For a list of rates to different countries, go to <http://mobileoptions.vzw.com/international/rates/a.html> * T-Mobile gets busy messaging T-Mobile has launched the Nokia 6800 messaging phone to its customers. The phone is the first phone from T-Mobile to include all three major public instant messaging services (Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger) built into the phone. The phone is available now for $149.99. The Nokia 6800 also folds open to reveal a QWERTY-style keypad, which makes typing in your instant messages easier than doing the dreaded "triple tap." T-Mobile is also holding a promotion called IM2Win - customers can answer pop culture trivia question for a chance to win Birdhouse skateboard decks, Haro Bikes, and K2 Snowboards, or the grand prize - a trip for four to the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo. Go to <http://www.t-mobile.com/IM2Win> for more details. The company said that in one week, the average player has answered about 80 trivia questions. That's a lot of IM'ing... * AT&T Wireless UMTS now in Dallas and San Diego AT&T Wireless has expanded its Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) broadband wireless service to Dallas and San Diego. The service gives customers the ability to use a handset, PDA or laptop to receive streaming audio and video services (or just plain surf the 'net) at an average speed between 220K bit/sec and 320K bit/sec., with bursts up to 384K bit/sec. In July, the service became available to customers in Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle. The company is selling the Motorola A845 ($299.99) and Nokia 6651 handsets ($299.99). The Novatel Wireless Merlin UMTS PC modem card costs $149.99 (after a rebate with one-year agreement), and lets PC users connect to the UMTS network. AT&T Wireless said the UMTS network will be upgraded to the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network, which it estimates will be able to attain peak data rates of up to 14.4M bit/sec. _______________________________________________________________ To contact: Keith Shaw Keith Shaw is Senior Reviews Editor at Network World.
